Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, Slim's SF, Nov. 16, 2007

Wow, had it really been a month since I saw live music? I guess so, since I had to work through the Colin Gilmore show and had battled a cold and various other challenges in the past few weeks. But, last Friday, we fixed that problem and fixed it good we did. I drove up to the bay to hang with a new friend and her law school classmates for a night of "Tequila Shots, Sombreros and Sweat" and trust me, it was delivered.

When we walked in, local musician Elliot Randall and his band were bringing down the house. This country girl was in love. Slim's is a small, long venue hall with one long bar on the side and food served in the back and the whole building was vibrating with energy. Think "Devil Went Down to Georgia" on crack and for a full set. Wow. Just. Wow. They found a new fan. All of them are quite sexy in that "I have complete command of my guitar" way too. I rocked out, got amped and was ready for the main act. Unfortunately, the whole silent movie treatment between bands went on way too long for me to sustain my energy and was ready for a nap by the time the screen went up.

Roger and his boys took the stage. I don't really know how to describe the music. Think Jimmy Buffet based in Arizona, rocked out, with a twinge wilder fan base. But the same funky, older white people that Jimmy attracts getting drunk, making out and being silly. (To the point where I actually had to start thinking that if "those people" can find someone to be happy in life with, I could too.) Actually, the band really reminds me of the Rugburns when Steve drank. I like Steve alive, but damn, I miss that. The fans screamed along to every song as Roger did shot, after shot, after shot sent up by the crowd. (7 or so in the first set.) There was indeed tequila, and his very large sombrero was removed frequently so that he could do the rockstar hair flip and send sweat flying in every direction. We all giggled as he did. This man was the consumate rock star performing for his demanding crowd. We danced and rocked and smiled and screamed. It was beautiful.

It was an awesome night of music and friends and an almost 2 hour set! I love me some Roger Clyne. And look, he has necking horses on his bus:
